SMATV (Satellite Master Antenna TV)
What is SMATV?
Satellite Master Antenna Television, or SMATV, is a method of television distribution used in Private Cable Systems - multi-room facilities such as hotels & motels, healthcare facilities, and apartments and MDUs (multiple-dwelling units). The end result is a custom channel lineup that is simple to use - simply hook up any television and you're watching TV. With over 40,000 SMATV units nationwide, Aufderworld can put our experience to work for you.
How does it work?
Essentially SMATV is a method of combining different television signals together and distributing them. These signals can come from local television stations, satellite providers such as DirecTV, and even can be generated from within your facility. The signals from these different sources are combined and modulated in headend system in a rack, much like the one pictured to the right. The combined signal is then distributed throughout the facility to each television in the complex. For example, a hotel could set up the following channel lineup:
- Channel 4 - NBC (from satellite)
- Channel 5 - Schedule of events (generated on-site)
- Channel 6 - HBO (from a DirecTV satellite dish)
That description may seem simple, and our engineers make it seem easy, but it's definitely a science. Take a look at a SMATV rack schematic (.pdf format) from a recent project to get an idea of what's really involved.
Aufderworld SMATV systems deliver the best in digital quality, choice and value when compared with traditional means supplied by the cable industry. There is no signal degradation with programming feed directly from satellite, as is found in miles of cable.
